A significant archaeological discovery has taken place in Southwark, London, where the largest collection of painted Roman wall plaster has been unearthed. Dating back nearly 2,000 years, these frescoes were found among the ruins of an early Roman building that was demolished before 200 AD. This site is renowned for previous discoveries, including stunning mosaics and a rare mausoleum.
In 2021, a construction crew stumbled upon this hidden treasure while clearing a demolition site. What appeared to be a chaotic heap of rubble turned out to be a remarkable find, as noted by the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA). The fragments represent one of the most significant fresco discoveries in Roman London, prompting a meticulous restoration effort.
Han Li, MOLA’s senior building-materials specialist, described the process akin to “the world’s toughest jigsaw puzzle.” Over a grueling three-month period, skilled conservators carefully sorted and placed the fragile pieces of plaster, mindful of their delicate condition. The painstaking work eventually revealed frescoes that adorned at least twenty interior walls, showcasing vibrant colors and intricate designs, including flowers, birds, and musical instruments.
The artistry displayed in these frescoes reflects both Roman classic motifs and unique local influences. Some elements, interpreted as grapes, may actually represent mistletoe, underscoring the blending of cultural identities. The materials represented in the artwork, although painted, indicate the wealth and refinement of the building’s owner.
Notably, a decorative *tabula ansata* inscribed with the word “FECIT,” meaning “has made this,” was also discovered, marking the first such find of its kind in Britain. Despite the absence of the artist’s name, this signature fosters a personal connection to the creator behind the walls. This discovery reshapes our understanding of early Roman Britain, challenging previously held notions that Londinium was merely a dreary outpost of the empire.
It instead reveals a thriving, cultured society where artistry flourished, contributing to the aesthetics of Roman life. Han Li expressed the privilege of witnessing such remarkable wall paintings that have not been seen for centuries.
