Archaeologists and volunteers have made a remarkable discovery at Trelai Park in Cardiff, Wales, uncovering several Bronze Age cremation burials alongside the outline of an additional ancient building. This find comes just two years after the excavation of an early house dated to 1500 BC in the same location. Old burial pits containing cremated human remains hint at the area’s long and complex history.

Beneath the surface, researchers discovered a timber circle believed to date from the Early Bronze Age, contributing to the site’s already intricate timeline. The efforts are part of the Caerau and Ely Rediscovering (CAER) Heritage Project, which has engaged local volunteers and communities. Led by Cardiff University, this initiative aims not only to explore the lives of ancient Cardiff residents but also to connect contemporary communities with their rich heritage.

The findings have the potential to fundamentally change our understanding of prehistoric Cardiff. Two years prior, volunteers at CAER discovered a well-preserved roundhouse, revealing the site’s historical significance. Archaeologist Dr. Oliver Davis emphasized the importance of the newly found cremations, suggesting they may have been placed near the roundhouse to honor deceased family members, thus indicating the site’s ceremonial importance.

In this year’s excavation, a smaller building also surfaced nearby, which might have served various purposes, suggesting a more complex settlement than previously imagined. The area, near a significant Roman villa and Caerau Hillfort, reinforces Cardiff’s historical importance. For volunteers, this experience has fostered connections within the community.

Alice Clarke, a long-time volunteer, expressed how it has built her confidence and allowed her to meet new friends. Moreover, Cardiff West Community High School is integrating these discoveries into educational programs, allowing students to engage directly with the history of their area.
