Ancient Venus Figurine Unearthed in Polish Baltic—6000 Years Old and Historic Implications

Deep in the serene countryside along Poland’s Baltic coast, a farmer made a remarkable discovery that has the potential to reshape our understanding of northern European prehistory. While working near the Parsęta River, he unearthed a small limestone sculpture, known as the ‘Kołobrzeg Venus.’ This figurine, measuring only 12 centimeters tall and dating back approximately 6,000 years, is now heralded as one of Poland’s most significant archaeological finds. The Kołobrzeg Venus features wide hips and prominent breasts, yet lacks facial characteristics.

This aligns with the characteristics of ancient Venus figurines from the Neolithic and Paleolithic eras, which have intrigued archaeologists for decades. Discovered in December 2022, the figurine was initially handed over to Waldemar Sadowski of the Parsęta Exploration and Search Group, an amateur archaeological organization. In 2023, professional archaeologist Marcin Krzepkowski recognized its historical significance. “This is the find of the century,” stated Aleksander Ostasz, director of the Polish Arms Museum in Kołobrzeg, highlighting its impact on local history.

Radiocarbon dating confirmed the figurine’s Neolithic origins, marking it as one of the earliest artifacts associated with settled agricultural societies in the region. Prior to this discovery, no similar figurines had been found north of the Carpathians, making the Kołobrzeg Venus a significant anomaly in Polish archaeology. Crafted from friable limestone, the figurine’s defining features suggest it may symbolize fertility, motherhood, or divine femininity. According to Jan Orliński, head of the Parsęta Exploration team, it likely represents fertility and holds traditional significance similar to other prehistoric Venus figurines across Europe.

Currently housed at the Polish Arms Museum, the Kołobrzeg Venus is poised to become a focal point in an expanded exhibition that will explore the region’s rich prehistory. Researchers aim to analyze its markings for insights into its creation and possible ritualistic use, further contributing to our understanding of Poland’s prehistoric spiritual life.
